Sunbird Pauses Service Linked to Nothing Chats Due to Security Issues

Sunbird, known for its namesake app, has temporarily closed its service. The company is looking into security issues and shared this news with users via the app. They’ve promised more updates when they are ready.

Sunbird stops its service

Sunbird’s service let Android users send messages to Apple users using the iMessage integration. This was done by running an Apple account on a virtual machine on Sunbird’s servers. Users had to sign in with their Apple ID in the Sunbird app to start messaging.

Last week, tech company Nothing partnered with Sunbird to add this feature to the Nothing Chats app. But then, Texts.com released a report. It said Sunbird didn’t keep its promise of end-to-end encryption and not storing data. This could let attackers access user data, affecting both Sunbird and Nothing Chats users.

After this, Nothing removed the beta Nothing Chats app from the Google Play Store. They said it was due to “several bugs”. This reason was criticized for not being accurate. Neither Nothing nor Sunbird talked about this until today. Sunbird stopped its service and removed its app from the Play Store.

Sunbird now needs to work on its service to deliver what it promised. The future of Nothing’s Chats app is unclear. With Apple announcing RCS support for its Messages app, the need for services like Sunbird’s might decrease.
