Nothing CEO Carl Pei Vision on Future of Computers

Recently, Nothing CEO and Co-founder Carl Pei took part in a session on Day 2 of Slush ’23 – a founder-focused event Held in Helsinki, Finland. The chat was hosted by Ted Persson, Partner at EQT Ventures. Carl started by explaining the origin of Nothing as a brand, its early days in teenage engineering, and then his vision for Nothing.

During the chat with Ted, he was asked about the future of smartphones and computers and what his opinions were regarding the AR/VR technology being considered the future of smartphones. Ted also questioned him about the Nothing approach to the new form of computer.

Carl replied that earlier he thought that smartphones would be the dominant form of computing for the foreseeable future, but in the last 3–4 months he has changed his mind, and now he thinks there is a new form of computer on the horizon. He says that he doesn’t know what it is exactly going to look like or what it is, but he thinks that the changes in the world of AI are going to change the world in fundamental ways, and one of the most important products that are going to come out of this revolution is the primary computers that humans use.

Further explaining, he says that we went from mainframes (desktops) to PCs (laptops) on everybody’s desk to computers in everybody’s pocket (smartphones) but something else is coming on the horizon.

He also explains what can be the ways to approach and develop this new form of computer as a startup. The first way is to decide the form factor and start R&D, and after 4 years release the product into the market, which is a high-risk approach with a high chance of failure. He says he would rather prefer another approach in which he would like to first build the strengths and supply chain and be a late mover towards a new form of technology and have an advantage by watching and learning from other companies while they develop this new form of computer and see what works the best and then execute in your own way.

In the end, Carl also said that they are working on this new form of computer at a very internal level and might be one of the companies to have such a new form of computer by 2028.
