Voice Messaging Comes to Google Messages on Wear OS Smartwatches

Google has just updated its Messages Wear OS app, making it possible for users to both record and play voice messages directly from their smartwatches. It’s surprising to many that this feature was absent for so long, especially since most recent smartwatches running on Wear OS are equipped with both loudspeakers and microphones. While users have been able to answer calls on their watches, sending voice messages remained out of reach.

This gap is finally addressed as Google releases this new update for its Wear OS app. With this rollout, users will notice a fresh UI design that aligns with the Android 14 look and feel. When users select a message to reply to, they’ll see three icons at the bottom with an emoji, a keyboard, and centrally located, a microphone. By pressing on this microphone icon, users can record a voice message up to 59 seconds long and then send it as their reply.

Before this update came into play, users’ choices were limited. They could either send short, preset responses or attempt to type on the watch’s challenging on-screen keyboard.

It’s worth noting that WhatsApp had already incorporated this voice messaging feature in its Wear OS app from its inception. With Google bringing this functionality to Messages, it might spur other messaging apps to incorporate this seemingly basic feature. Although it might seem like a standard option to include, many messaging platforms still need to adopt it.
