As soon as you install your iPhone to the latest iOS 17.2 version you will find the new Journal App automatically on your home screen. Currently, the Journal App is only released for iOS and not for iPad OS or Mac OS. The Journal app provides you a space to write about your day or your experience. It allows you to add photos, places, and voice notes to store your memories about the day. It lets you write about the small and big moments that occur in your life so that you can practice gratitude and improve your well-being.

It also provides an option to schedule time for writing the Journal and the phone will remind you of that to make it a habit. Apple has also added Journaling suggestions that use on-device intelligence to create journaling suggestions based on your everyday moments. These Suggestions help you reflect on the topics that you might want to write about such as places you go and photos you take. Journal has only access to the suggestions you choose to write thus your data stays private and it’s also end-to-end encrypted.

You can turn on and off the Journaling Suggestions from App settings and also Customize them according to you. Some of the Basic suggestions the app provides are “What went well for you this week?” about any particular person from your photos app or about any place that you went and took photos, which helps in writing the Journal.

Moving on to the layout of the app, on the homepage you can see your journal entries on the top which are sorted according to date. At the bottom, there is the add button to start writing the entry for the journal. In the top right corner is the filter button which brings a drop-down menu from which you can select the filter to sort the journal entries based on photos, videos, recorded audio, or places.

Tapping the plus icon opens the entry screen, where you can start writing the entry. At the top of the keyboard, there are five options that can be included in your entry, such as images or videos from the Photos app, places, voice messages, a camera to click and add an image or videos, and your previous entries. At the top, you can see the date, and from the top left corner, you can also bookmark the entry.

By tapping on on date you can either set it to Entry Date, which selects that day for the entry, or set a custom date in case you missed the entry for any other specific day. In the main home screen, by tapping on three dots you can either edit, bookmark, or delete any entry from the Journal right away.

You can adjust various options and disable/enable some features from the settings of the Journal App. At the top, you can see all the permissions provided to the app below and you have various options, such as adjusting the preferred language for the app, a toggle to skip journaling suggestions while creating new entries, and also an option to lock the journal app through Face ID. You can choose whether to save the photos and videos taken in the journal app to the photos app. A schedule can also be set for the Journal App, which will remind you to write entries for the day at a custom time for the weekdays you select.

Apple has once again nailed the experience of the Journal app by providing useful features like Journal scheduling, which helps to maintain a consistent journaling practice, and Journaling suggestions that help a lot to someone new to writing journals. Safety and data privacy are also maintained as the journal entries are synced to your iCloud and are encrypted.
