WhatsApp to Discontinue Unlimited Google Drive Backup for Android Users

Back in 2015, WhatsApp started offering Google Drive backup for Android users which helped them back up their WhatsApp history directly to Google Drive.

WhatsApp and Google confirmed that the Google Drive backup is going to end very soon. So in conclusion, you will get only 15 GB of storage which you get from your Google account that is shared to Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos to backup your WhatsApp history.

Google has confirmed that for users with Google Workspace subscriptions, their storage quota will not be impacted. If you have limited storage you can transfer your WhatsApp chat easily to other devices.

WhatsApp backups on Android will continue to work, as long as you have available space within your Google Account storage. If you hit your storage limit, you’ll need to free up space to resume backups by removing items you do not need.

When will this change be implemented?

This will come into effect after being rolled out to WhatsApp Beta users and then to all WhatsApp users on Android which will start in early 2024.
