Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chipset would be downgraded to maintain its overall cost

Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 chipset last year, which was mostly used in mid-range smartphones. The chipset was highly praised for its impressive performance and affordability. However, the latest news suggests that the successor to this chipset might not offer any significant performance improvements. Instead, it is speculated to have a slight downgrade.

Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 might see performance downgrade

According to Digital Chat Station, Qualcomm is preparing to develop a new processor named Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 to address the issue of high expenses associated with the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2. The previous Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 fared well in mid-range handsets but was not widely adopted due to its high price.

According to leaked information, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 is built on TSMC’s 4nm technology and has a 1+3+4 architecture, similar to its predecessor. The CPU contains one large core that runs at 2.63GHz, three cores that run at 2.4GHz, and four cores that run at 1.8GHz. The main core is known as the Arm Cortex-A715, and it includes an Adreno 720 GPU.

The Snapdragon 7+ Gen2 contains a 1X 2.91GHz Cortex-X2 primary core, 3X 2.49GHz power-saving cores, and 4X 1.8GHz secondary cores, as well as the Adreno 725 GPU. In comparison, the successor, Snapdragon 7 Gen 3, appears to be a step back. This change was purportedly required by Qualcomm to address cost-related difficulties with the previous version.

Because the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2 is pricey, few smartphones use it but Qualcomm intends to change that with its successor. As a result, we may soon see the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 CPU in lots of new devices.
