WhatsApp has introduced a new feature that allows users to pin up to three messages in both one-on-one conversations and group chats. This update, announced by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and WhatsApp head Will Cathcart, builds on the capability introduced last December which permitted only a single message to be pinned in any chat.
For the first time, users have the option to pin various types of messages such as text, images, and polls. To pin a message, one needs to long-press on the desired message, choose “Pin” from the options that appear, and then select how long the message should remain pinned. The choices for duration include seven days by default, with alternatives of 24 hours or 30 days available. Messages will automatically unpin after the set duration unless they are manually unpinned earlier.
An added convenience is the ability to quickly navigate to the content of a pinned message within the conversation by simply clicking on it.
In the context of group chats, administrators have the discretion to allow members to pin messages. Once a message is pinned in a group, all members are notified, enhancing the visibility of important announcements or information. However, it’s worth noting that new members who join a group after a message has been pinned or those who do not have the group chat history will not see the pinned message. Similarly, members who deleted the message before it was pinned will be unable to view it.
