Starlink satellite internet is set to play a major role in expanding digital connectivity in India after Gujarat became the latest state to formalize cooperation with Starlink, the satellite broadband venture backed by Elon Musk. The agreement marks a significant step toward bridging the digital divide in areas where traditional broadband infrastructure remains limited or economically unviable.
Gujarat’s Push for Advanced Connectivity
The Gujarat government signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with Starlink to explore the deployment of satellite-based internet services across remote and underserved regions of the state. The focus will be on improving access in rural villages, border areas, and regions prone to natural disruptions where fiber-optic cables and mobile towers are difficult to maintain.
Unlike conventional broadband networks, Starlink relies on a constellation of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites that deliver high-speed internet with comparatively low latency. This technology allows faster deployment and broader coverage, making it suitable for geographically challenging locations.
Why Starlink Satellite Internet Matters
For Gujarat, the agreement aligns with long-term digital infrastructure goals that support education, healthcare, governance, and emergency response systems.
