Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S25 series is set to make strides with a significant upgrade in software update functionality. According to a tweet by @chunvn8888 on November 1, the Galaxy S25 will be the first flagship in the Galaxy S series to support A/B seamless updates. This change could mark a new era for Samsung, enhancing system stability during updates.
What Are A/B Seamless Updates?
Google first introduced A/B seamless updates with its Pixel phone series in 2016. Despite nearly a decade passing since this technology was introduced, Samsung has only recently started adopting it. The A/B update system allows devices to retain a working version of the operating system on a separate partition during over-the-air (OTA) updates. This feature minimizes risks of the device failing to boot after an update, meaning fewer trips to service centers for repair or reflashing.
Hardware Requirements for A/B Updates
The A/B seamless update feature requires support at the hardware level. Phones not built with this capability from the outset cannot acquire it through later firmware updates. This limitation explains why many Samsung models, including recent high-end models, do not yet support this feature.
Samsung’s Approach So Far
Earlier this year, Samsung introduced A/B seamless updates with the Galaxy A55, its first phone to support the feature. Surprisingly, even recent premium models like the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Galaxy Z Flip6 do not have A/B support. As a result, these devices may face longer update times or other inconveniences during the update process.
Galaxy S25: Setting a New Standard?
The Galaxy S25 series, anticipated for an early 2025 release, is expected to debut with Android 15 and Samsung’s One UI 7 interface. If Samsung includes A/B seamless updates in this series, it could pave the way for future models to adopt the feature, potentially transforming the user experience by reducing downtime during updates.
With the launch of the Galaxy S25 series, Samsung appears ready to bring this technology to its flagship lineup, signaling a stronger commitment to smoother, more reliable update processes across its devices.
