Nothing Phone (2a) vs Phone (2a) Plus Speed and Performance Analysis

Recently, we ran a speed test of the Nothing Phone (2a) against its upgraded sibling, the Nothing Phone (2a) Plus. Both devices are running Nothing OS 2.6 based on Android 14 but our Phone (2a) Plus has 8GB RAM and Phone (2a) has 12GB RAM.

Performance Testing

We tested app launching speeds, social media browsing, gaming, and benchmarks to see how the devices performed in real life. Results are much closer than expected:

  • Boot-up Speed: Nothing Phone (2a) powered up a few seconds faster than the Phone (2a) Plus.
  • Fingerprint Unlock: Fairly marginal response of the Phone (2a) for the better fingerprint unlock.
  • Camera App Launch: There was no actual difference in launching the camera. Both the phones did it at the same time. Thus, proving the Phone (2a) Plus model does not hold much performance improvement in basic level tasks.

App and Game Launching

The Nothing Phone (2a) Plus was slightly better in opening apps like Chrome, Facebook, and Instagram. Game launching was almost the same; sometimes Phone (2a) could load games faster than the Phone (2a) Plus.

File Management and Video Editing:

In heavy tests, like unzipping a big file, and exporting some filtered videos, the 2A Plus just had a little, tiny edge from time to time in finishing these tasks.

RAM Management

Both of these phones were able to keep most of the apps in the background without reloading. Only a few in the Phone (2a) Plus have needed to reload, such as Instagram.

Benchmark Scores:

The benchmark test scored both devices as almost identical in results, with Phone (2a) Plus taking a small edge in multi-core performance.

Overall Impression

And despite the claim of a 10% performance improvement by Nothing right there on the Nohting Phone (2a) Plus, we saw no such difference between the two in our tests. A few small improvements were pointed out, mainly the video recording capabilities of the front camera, for which the novelty of the things presented by Phone (2a) Plus would not be enough to justify an upgrade to it.
