Nothing company has officially launched the first open beta of Nothing OS 3.0 based on Android 15 to Nothing Phone (2a) users, packed with new features and enhancements designed to improve the user experience.
Nothing Phone (2a) users can now upgrade to the latest version, which includes the September 5, 2024, security patch and the size for the update is 1.4 GB. The beta update will expand to other models like Nothing Phone (2) in November, Nothing Phone (1), Nothing Phone (2a) Plus, and CMF Phone 1 in December.
How to Install Nothing OS 3.0 Open Beta
First of all, we don’t recommend you install this beta update on your primary device. If you are well aware of this type of update, then you can simply proceed. This update doesn’t wipe your data but if you try to rollback for sure, it will format your device.
The update is not available directly through the usual settings but requires downloading an APK.
Getting Started with Nothing OS 3.0 Open Beta on Nothing Phone (2a):
- Verify that your device is running NOS version 2.6, with the build number Pacman-U2.6-240828_1906.
- Download the specified APK and install it from your downloads folder.
- Go to Settings > System > Update to Beta version.
- Click on “Check for new version” and follow the prompts to initiate the update.
Nothing OS 3.0: Notable Changes and Features
- Boot Animation: The update removes the boot animation featured in earlier betas.
- UI and Performance Enhancements: The update boasts an improved UI with faster animations and quicker camera app responsiveness. Users may experience some initial jitters post-installation, but performance stabilizes shortly afterward.
- Lock Screen Customization: The update introduces five new clock styles for the lock screen, with customization options that allow users to adjust clock style and expand widget areas. A new dotted animation enhances the fingerprint unlock experience, and the number pad design has been simplified.
- Quick Settings Panel: A redesigned quick settings panel replaces the previous black background tiles, even in light mode. New toggles have been added for managing ringing modes and glyph lighting directly from the panel. The brightness slider is now thicker and includes a direct toggle for auto-brightness.
- App Drawer Enhancements: The app drawer now includes an AI-powered sorting feature that categorizes apps into folders. A basic app drawer option is also available, allowing users to pin apps for easy access.
- Android 15 Features: Integration of Android 15’s partial screen recording allows recording of individual apps. The archive feature frees up space without deleting apps or data. The system diagnostics tool has been enhanced to check component health and perform tests.
Missing Features:
- Dotted Charging Animation and Gallery: Not included in the first open beta.
- Weather App Animation: Promised enhancements to the weather app animation are pending for future updates.
