iPhone Auto-Restarts After Police Seize It – iOS 18.1 Explained

A strange phenomenon with seized iPhone devices has recently caught the attention of law enforcement. According to 404 Media, police discovered that these iPhones were restarting on their own without any user input. At first, the cause of the issue was unclear, but experts have now started to uncover the mystery behind it.

It turns out that the unexpected restarts are not a bug, but a new feature added by Apple. Dr. Jiska Classen from the Hasso Plattner Institute confirmed that Apple introduced an “inactive restart” feature in iOS 18.1. Classen shared a screenshot of the relevant code on social media, verifying the update.

iPhone restart automatic

Christopher Vans, an expert from Magnet Forensics, explained that they found the code triggering an inactive timer. According to Vans, when the timer hits zero, the device automatically restarts, changing its status from “AFU” (authorized file access) to “BFU” (unauthorized file access).

This feature is designed to protect user data on locked devices, preventing thieves from accessing it easily. However, it seems that this security measure is causing some trouble for law enforcement, complicating their investigations.
