Apple is sticking to its strategy of reserving the periscope telephoto camera for its Pro models. According to a report from South Korean publication The Elec, the upcoming iPhone 17 series—expected to launch next year—will follow the same approach as the iPhone 16 series, with only the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max featuring periscope telephoto cameras.
This decision means the standard iPhone 17 and the expected iPhone 17 Air (or Slim) will miss out on the advanced zoom capabilities offered by the Pro variants. This exclusivity comes despite reports of LG Innotek, Apple’s supplier for camera modules, investing in new facilities. While this investment could potentially support upgraded camera features in the iPhone 17 series, the periscope unit will remain a Pro-only feature.
The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max currently boast 5x optical zoom with their periscope cameras. It’s anticipated that the iPhone 17 Pro models will offer the same or better optical zoom capabilities. However, standard iPhone 17 models will likely stick with the traditional camera setup, leaving high-end photography and zoom capabilities exclusive to Pro users.
Apple’s decision to limit the periscope telephoto camera to the Pro lineup reinforces the divide between its standard and premium devices. For consumers, this could mean choosing the Pro models if camera features are a priority.
