Google has officially rolled out the first public beta of Android 16 after releasing two developer betas earlier this year. The update is now available for Google Pixel devices (Pixel 6 and newer) enrolled in the Android Beta Program.
Key Features in Android 16 Beta
1. Adaptive Apps:
One of the standout features of Android 16 is its focus on adaptive apps. Google is ensuring that apps work seamlessly across different screen sizes, orientations, and device types.
Developers targeting API level 36 will need to support resizable windows on devices with screens 600dp wide or larger. Additionally, apps will no longer be allowed to lock window scaling or orientation, making layouts more flexible—especially for foldable devices.
2. Live Updates:
Google is introducing “Live Updates,” its version of Apple’s Live Activities feature. These are dynamic notifications for ongoing tasks like navigation, ride-hailing, or food delivery. The new Progress Style notification template will allow for customizable icons, milestone tracking, and status updates. Samsung has implemented a similar feature called the “Now Bar” in One UI 7.
3. Advanced Video Support:
Android 16 brings support for the Advanced Professional Video (APV) codec, offering high-quality video recording for professionals. It supports up to 8K resolution with a 2Gbps bitrate, making it ideal for video production and post-editing.
4. Camera and Accessibility Improvements:
The update introduces native night mode scene detection for cameras and enhances vertical text rendering. Accessibility features have also been improved to make Android more user-friendly.
Android 16 Release Timeline
Google plans to release at least three more public betas of Android 16 before its official launch. A major beta with new APIs is expected in Q2, followed by a minor update in Q4 to address bugs.
Android 16 is scheduled to launch earlier than previous versions, with the final release planned for March.
